It had been three hours since the professor had been killed by his creation, and now the man – if you could call it a man – was after his assistant, George.
George scrambled up the Heath, away from the choking London smog, with the brass man staggering and juddering behind him. The clockwork mechanism in its core needed a wind up. No chance, George thought, hurling the brass key into a thicket of sycamore.
‘Why?’ the automaton croaked like a hinge in need of oil.
It reached out its superhuman arms, but George dodged, just as the clockwork finally clicked to a stop.
